“The Silent Threat: How High Cholesterol Damages Your Arteries Over Time”

How High Cholesterol Affects Your Arteries Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in your blood. Your body needs some cholesterol to build cells and make hormones, but too much cholesterol, especially “bad” LDL cholesterol, can be harmful. When cholesterol levels are high, excess LDL cholesterol can start to stick to the walls of your arteries. Over time, this buildup forms plaques (fatty deposits), leading to a condition called atherosclerosis. What happens inside your arteries? Plaque buildup narrows the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow freely. This reduces oxygen-rich blood reaching vital organs like your heart and brain. If a plaque ruptures (breaks open), it can cause a blood clot to form at the site. This clot can block blood flow entirely. Why is this dangerous?
